CHAPTER SEVEN

If Courtney thought the place had been in a frenzied uproar during the game, it was nothing compared to this. An ambulance and several police cars had arrived, their lights and sirens adding to the noise and color that surrounded them. The audience had been told to stay put, but they were milling around in their seats, trying to peer around the back of the scoreboard. The football team, the band, and the cheerleaders had each claimed a section of the field and they were huddled together in anxious solidarity as they waited to find out what had happened and what was going to happen from here.

Detective Fletcher, looking like something out of a TV show with his long trench coat flapping out behind his button-down shirt and trousers. “Courtney. I can’t say I’m pleased to find you here. When I heard over the radio it had something to do with a dog, though, I figured you would be. Want to tell me what’s going on from your perspective?”

She knew he’d already have received some details from his coworkers, but Courtney wasn’t concerned that he was testing her. She’d known Detective Fletcher for as long as she’d lived in Curly Bay, and she trusted him implicitly. “Basically, the referee went missing after halftime. The dog, Rosie, happened to get away from a high school student named Mason. He found both the dead referee and the dog behind the scoreboard.”

The detective glanced down at the dog, who seemed to have taken no notice of the fact that the whole school grounds had descended into complete havoc. She leaned against Courtney’s leg. “Is that the dog’s blood or someone else’s?”

“One of the paramedics already checked her out to be sure,” Courtney replied. “Rosie isn’t bleeding anywhere.”

“I see.” Detective Fletcher stuffed his hands in his pockets.

“I know how it must look,” Courtney went on. She felt desperate and wanted some reassurance from Fletcher that this was all going to be okay. “Rosie’s a great dog, though. Mason has been volunteering with her at the shelter over the last few weeks and spending a ton of time with her. She’s wonderful, and I’d never have brought her here if I thought she would do anything like that.”

He tipped his head as he frowned at the dog. “I know this is an unexpected question, but is there any chance Mason could’ve trained her to attack during that time?”

Courtney’s mouth dropped open so hard she felt her jaw pop. “No. There’s no way. Training a dog to do something like that takes a long time, not just a few hours for a couple of weeks. They go out for runs or to play fetch.” Granted, it’d been Mason’s idea to bring Rosie to the game in the first place, but Courtney was sure it was pure coincidence.

“Mmm.” He seemed to be mulling her answer over, deciding if he could accept it as truth. “And what about Mason himself? Any chance he had the motive to do anything bad to this referee?”

“Oh.
